Poll
The top of a cow's head between the horns, or where the horns would be.
Also: crown, top of the head
The poll is the bony crest at the top of the skull, between the bases of the horns. In horned cattle the horns grow from bony cores on either side of it; in naturally hornless cattle the poll is smooth or rises to a peak, as in the Aberdeen Angus and the Red Poll. The word once simply meant head in English, and it gives us polled, meaning hornless, as well as the old sense of counting heads at an election. Breed standards describe the shape of the poll, and it is the place to feel for scurs or the buds of growing horns in young calves.
