Yoke
A wooden beam that joins two draught animals so they can pull together.
Also: neck yoke, head yoke, jua
A yoke is a wooden bar laid across a pair of oxen so they pull a plough, cart or sledge as one. There are two main kinds. The neck or withers yoke rests on the neck in front of the shoulders, held by bows or pegs, and is the usual type for zebu, whose hump keeps it in place. The head yoke is strapped to the horns or the forehead and was traditional in Spain, Portugal and parts of France, Germany and Switzerland. Single yokes and collars are also used. The yoke is old enough to share a root across many languages, from Sanskrit yuga to Latin iugum and English yoke.
