Hump
The raised mound of muscle and fat over the shoulders of zebu cattle, or on the neck of sanga cattle.
Also: thoracic hump, cervico-thoracic hump, kakud
The hump is the clearest mark of zebu cattle. In zebu it sits over the withers and is made mostly of an enlarged rhomboideus muscle with fat between the fibres, so it is called a thoracic hump. Sanga cattle carry a smaller cervico-thoracic hump set further forward, on the neck. Bulls have far larger humps than cows, and in breeds such as the Kankrej, Ongole and Hallikar a bull's hump can be very prominent. Whether the hump stores energy for lean seasons is often suggested but not settled. In working cattle the hump helps hold a neck yoke in place, and in jallikattu players try to hang on to it.
