Nose ring
A ring or rope through the soft septum of the nose, used to lead and control bulls and working cattle.
Also: bull ring, nose rope, nath
A nose ring is fitted through the thin wall of tissue between the nostrils, usually in a young bull, so that a handler can lead the animal with a pole or rope; the nose is sensitive, so light pressure gives control over a large animal. In Europe and North America it is mostly used on breeding and show bulls. In South Asia most working bullocks carry a nose rope passed through the septum, called a nath in Hindi, by which the driver steers a cart or plough. Clip-on rings that need no piercing are used to stop calves suckling. Rules on nose rings vary between countries.
