Roan
A coat where white and coloured hairs are mixed evenly, giving a soft blue-grey or pinkish look.
Also: blue roan, strawberry roan, red roan
In a roan animal, white hairs and coloured hairs grow side by side across the coat instead of forming patches. A red animal crossed with a white one of the same breed gives roan offspring, a classic example of codominance taught in genetics lessons. The Shorthorn is the best known roan breed, recorded as red, white or roan. The Blue Grey, a first cross between the Whitebred Shorthorn and the Galloway, takes its colour from roan, and the Belgian Blue comes in white, blue roan and black. Strawberry roan is an old Western term for a red roan, used mostly of horses but also of cattle.
