Pied
Coloured in large patches of white and black, red or brown, as in the Holstein Friesian.
Also: piebald, black and white, red and white, bunt, bont
A pied animal has a coat of irregular white patches mixed with coloured ones. Black pied is the pattern of the Holstein Friesian, the most numerous dairy breed in the world; red pied is seen in the Red Holstein, the Simmental and the Montbéliarde, among many others. In German and Dutch breed names the words bunt and bont mark a pied type, as in the German Schwarzbunt. The pattern is inherited, and no two animals are marked exactly alike, so before ear tags and photographs breeders recorded cows by sketching their patches. Some breeds keep the white to set places, as in colour-sided, belted and white-faced cattle.
