Cattle at National Milk Day (India)
National Milk Day has been marked in India since 2014 on 26 November, the birthday of Verghese Kurien (1921 to 2012). Kurien went to Anand in Gujarat as a young government engineer, stayed to manage a small milk cooperative, and built it into a model that farmers' unions copied across the country. Operation Flood, which he led from 1970, linked village cooperatives to city markets, and India became the world's largest milk producer. The day is kept by dairy cooperatives, veterinary colleges and schools with talks, milk drinks and awards for farmers. Much of India's milk comes from buffaloes as well as cattle, from small herds of two or three animals.
