Dun
A dull, greyish or yellowish brown coat colour, seen in Galloways, Dexters and Highland cattle.
Also: mouse-coloured, grey-brown
Dun describes a muted brown or grey-brown coat, lighter and duller than red or black, produced when a gene dilutes the usual pigment. In British breeds it is a recognised colour of the Galloway, the Highland and the Dexter, which is bred in black, red and dun. In the Highland and Galloway dun ranges from pale silver to a dark mouse brown. Many old Alpine breeds, such as the Brown Swiss and Grey Alpine, have greyish brown coats with a pale ring round the muzzle, though these are usually called brown or grey rather than dun. Belted Galloways also come in dun.
