Quick and strong breeds
Trotting bullocks and racing bulls: Hallikar, Amrit Mahal and the karapan sapi of Madura.
Quick, strong cattle are the trotters, racers and powerful pullers of the cattle world. India bred some of the fastest working cattle anywhere for the bullock carts and armies of the past: the Hallikar and Amrit Mahal of Karnataka, the Khillari of the Deccan, the Nagori of Rajasthan and the Kangayam of Tamil Nadu. The Ongole is famous for strength. On the island of Madura in Indonesia, racing bulls pull riders down straight tracks in the karapan sapi. These breeds are lean, long-legged and sound in the feet, with stamina as well as speed.
Bred for the road
Before railways and motor transport, much of India's goods moved by bullock cart, and armies moved their guns and stores the same way. Fast, enduring bullocks were valuable. The rulers of Mysore developed the Amrit Mahal from Hallikar stock to haul army transport, and the breed was later used by the British. The Khillari of Maharashtra and Karnataka, and the Nagori of Rajasthan, were also known as fast trotters for carts and roads.
Racing and pulling contests
Speed and strength are still tested in contests. In Maharashtra, bullock-cart races are popular in villages, with Khillari bullocks a common choice. In Tamil Nadu, light carts are raced in rekla races. In Andhra Pradesh, Ongole bulls compete in pulling contests in which a pair drags a heavy stone. On Madura, karapan sapi races pair bulls in a yoke and send them down a short course at speed.
What makes an agile breed
Agile cattle are usually of medium size, lean and well muscled, with long legs, hard black hooves and a strong back. They are alert and responsive to their driver. A good trotting pair can cover long distances in a day. Many of these breeds now have far fewer working animals, but their contests, shows and breeding societies keep the type alive.
